This past weekend it was noted as the fight of the century Floyd Mayweather fighting against a very strong Manny Pacquiao. The fighters went the full 12 rounds, but there wasn’t much of a all out bawl although Pacquiao looked very strong but Mayweather remained very much in control throughout and claimed the unanimous decision victory. Many fans rated this fight less than its hype and felt cheated. But lets analyze the fight from a professional prospective.

The Sweet Science of Boxing

Boxing is a combat sport in which two people engage in a contest of strength, speed, reflexes, endurance and will, by throwing punches at each other. There are different styles of boxing as fighter will develop in his career. This weekends fight displayed two styles. One fighter being a brawler strong fighter, the other is a counter-puncher always moving.

Pacquiao, a brawler is a fighter who generally lacks finesse and footwork in the ring, but makes up for it through his punching power and speed.Brawlers tend to be more predictable and easy to hit but usually fare well enough against other fighting styles because they train to take punches very well. They often have a higher chance than other fighting styles to score a knockout against their opponents because they focus on landing big, powerful hits, instead of smaller, faster attacks. Oftentimes they place focus on training on their upper body instead of their entire body, to increase power and endurance. They also aim to intimidate their opponents because of their power, stature and ability to take a punch.

Mayweather is a counter puncher very slippery, excellent footwork and with finesse, is a defensive style fighter who often rely on his opponent’s mistakes in order to gain the advantage. Whether it be on the score cards or more preferably a knockout, his use of his well-rounded defense to avoid attacks or block attacks and then immediately catch the opponent off guard with a well placed and timed punch.

With the two styles is the recipe for the sweet science of boxing. In the Mayweather/Pacquiao fight this was a lesson in the sport of boxing. Unless you are a true fan or a fighter you could see that Mayweather out boxed Pacquiao. Really Pacquiao could not make the adjustments. Yes he did get in a few shots here and there, and a few combinations but Mayweather was able to slip out of situations that other styles of boxers would have dropped to the heavy hands of Pacquiao. Which is why Mayweather was very successful in wining the fight after a 12 round decision.

Fans who don’t understand the art of boxing didn’t see the beauty in Mayweather’s moves. fans misinterupet Mayweathers movement for running away. I great instructor of the martial arts once told me,  “The best defense is not being there” Now i give credit to Pacquiao for his aggressiveness and determination to get the knockout. But Mayweather simply outbox the guy. Now do I think there should be a rematch, NO not worth watching because i know what the outcome will be. Pacquiao wasn’t expecting the lesson he received on last Saturday.
